Creative Futures: Careers in Arts Panel
Concordi’art’s panel, “Creative Futures: Careers in Arts,” held on January 15th at the 4th Space invited discussion between audience members and panellists, as well as Molly Sturge, the co-president of Concordi’art, as the moderator.
One of the panellists, Audrey-Eve Goulet, a young, successful artist, spoke about her path as both entrepreneur and artist and the ways she has been able to emerge within the current art world. In turn, David Liss, a Concordia alumnus, spoke extensively on his experience and outlook through his differing careers as an independent writer, artist, and curator, as well as his past as the artistic director and curator of the Bronfman Centre for the Arts and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Toronto. Pascale Girardin, a current professor in Ceramics at Concordia, presented her reconciliation between her current art practice and its commercialization. Following Professor Girardin's discussion was Rodrigo D’Alcantara, a Brazilian visual artist and additionally a professor at Concordia. He walked the audience through his experience working within the art world, highlighting the importance of counter-hegemonic narratives, syncretism, dissident mythologies, and queer experiences. The last panellist was Michael Lewis, co-founder of the Wishbone Gallery, who offered different perspectives as a gallerist and technician, explaining the inner workings of galleries to his audience.
The panel held an informal approach, as questions from the public were encouraged and were discussed. They opened up important discourses about being an artist or a creative in today’s art world. With messages of hope and advice, I’d consider it a successful event.
Concordi’art, as a student-run club, presents itself as ‘Connecting Concordia Art Students’ and puts forward events, such as this panel, with the hope of bridging the multiple facets of the art world while making it accessible to all (@Concordiart on Instagram).
