Letter From the Editor
We have learned to analyze, critique, and find meaning in the details. All of these ideas, desires, wonders and questions have flourished within the confines of our academic milieu. How to bridge the gap between theory and praxis? Where do they fit into our day-to-day life?
CUJAH CUADRO is an introduction where art history discourse and the artistic community merge. Its name, stemming from the Spanish word for frame or painting, CUADRO is a representation of its community, framing contemporary artistic engagement through critical art historical discourse. It aims to challenge established modes of creation, and institutions and focus on uplifting open conversations which allow further interactive experiences with what we see, study and read. As students in Fine Arts, we have access to a plethora of resources: our peers and the knowledge they bring to our community. CUADRO is the bridge to connect you to me and to connect a community of creatives. We review the where, what, why and who of the Montréal art scene, all while critiquing through relevant art historical frameworks and CUJAH’s mandated de/anti/postcolonial and interdisciplinary lenses.
Montréal is home to a diverse range of independent artist spaces, emerging and aspiring creatives, festivals, and collectives—either within Concordia’s hallowed halls or scattered all over the city. CUJAH believes that the art world need not be a ‘those who know, know” space but rather one that is accessible and captivating to all those who wish to be part of it. Our goal for CUADRO is to create precisely that kind of diverse, open, and inclusive space for artists, art lovers, or those who love to be involved!
With love,
Sam Tréville, CUJAH’s Managing Editor
