Illagit/Relations at FOFA Gallery
Illagit/Relations is on display at the FOFA Gallery between September 30th and December 6th, 2024. Curated by Heather Igloliorte and Taqralik Partridge, the installation features 16 artists and collectives from across Inuit Nunaat. These artists’ pieces work together to map Inuit relationships with the past and present, physical and spiritual, personal and environmental, human and non-human.
The show is materially dynamic, capturing and engaging with the viewer through photographs, ceramics, textiles and video works. This dynamism captures the current moment in Inuit art, cementing contemporary culture in conversation with tradition and inter-personal, alongside earthly, relations.
The first exposure to the exhibition is through the vitrine display, which features 17 suspended garments. Each item of traditional Inuit clothing is unique and tells the story of Arctic seasons. Alongside the pink floral motif stamped onto the back wall, this striking introduction to the exhibition invites the passerby to explore the rest of the gallery space. If you have only passed the vitrine, it is well worth reviewing the entire exhibition.
As part of the larger event, ᕿᓐᓂᕋᔮᑦᑐᖅ Qinnirajaattuq / Ripples: Making Waves in Inuit Art, a symposium hosted by Inuit Futures in Art Leadership, Illagit/Relations focuses on creating a space for Inuit artists in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal. The symposium will take place from November 6th to 8th and is presented alongside two other exhibitions: Amisut/Many at La Guilde and ᐆᒻᒪᖁᑎᒃ / uummaqutik at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
